so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids - mrbigstuff - 06-22-2011 I was in a situation yesterday that brought this home to me: we were cavorting in a field where my kids were playing in the sprinklers and I had an older Olympus P/S that is rather lousy. I captured the moment, but not in a high quality way. The shots, had they been better, would have been suitable for a calendar or enlargements. a camera that I can throw into my bag and not worry too much about. I'm looking to replace my lost but beloved Fuji V10 with something like that but better. Am I destined to get a Canon Sxx like everyone in this position or is there something with more control and great low-light capability? I'm willing to sacrifice video and all that other stuff. Re: so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids - sekker - 06-22-2011 The only P/S cameras I have been happy with have been Canons. I've tried in the past 3 years Nikon, Panasonic / Lumix and an Olympus. None take as good a picture as any of my canons - even those getting on in years. Re: so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids - mrbigstuff - 06-22-2011 I should add that I have a Nikon DSLR so I'm not looking to replace that with a P/S camera, this thing will sit in my bag until a need arises to use it. Re: so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids - 3d - 06-22-2011 The Canon G12 is a compact (but not tiny) camera with room to grow. Hotshoe on top for an external flash. And tons of hard dials and buttons for the creative photographer in you in case you want to explore something besides full Auto. Re: so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids - jdc - 06-22-2011 Ive got this: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx130_is takes double AA, mine only real complaint is that it eats regular ones pretty fast, ni-cads are a must. Got mine at staples -- on sale, coupons and rewards got it down to $130 or so. Does not come with a SD card. Re: so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids - August West - 06-22-2011 Stick with a lasso, and when they're teenagers, a bear trap. Re: so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids - NewtonMP2100 - 06-22-2011 .....is this like 'Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang'.....?? ....what happens when you CAPTURE them......a spanking or do they get a treat.....???? Maybe it's a big Nikon SLR, not a small Nikon SLR. I've got a neighbor who works with 2 D300 cameras and didn't realize how much smaller and lighter the entry-level D40/60/3000/3100 models are---any one of which would still be easy to carry and perform far better than any non-SLR for casually (but satisfactorily) taking snapshots of kids moving fast. I'm rather tempted to get a 4/3 camera but even they, too, start to get big with the lenses. so, it looks like a p/s something like the G Canons if I want flexibility or the Elph series. I still have a very capable Nikon 995 but it's slow to use compared to most modern cams. |
