Scanner advice ? - guod - 06-27-2011
I have an oldish Epson 2450 scanner, but I'm looking to upgrade to something with a higher optical resolution so I can digitize wedding pics. (and then some pictures and 35 mm negatives that I took myself)
I'm debating between an Epson v300 and a Canon 5600F, but the v300 is currently the direction I am leading
I'd like to keep the price around the $100 range, but I'd go a little higher if there's a good reason.
Can anyone give me some feedback on thsese and how well the work (or don't) with Photoshop elements ?

I have Elements v 6, so it would all depend on what version ships with the scanner.

For $100, I wouldn't have big hopes on the performance of a "pass" type scanner vs a drum scan with
much higher rez and brighter backlighting for accuracy.
I'd have more faith in something 2x the price that does film only. Perhaps Costco is your preferred route
until you do it in sufficient volume?

Film (negatives) only is not an option because I don't have negatives of everything.
I wouldn't call it a one time thing either just because I have so many photos to go through. After I do mine, I'll probably do the pictures that my parents have in umpteen different shoeboxes at their place.
I do appreciate all the time involved in the thoughts and suggestions everyone is providing.

I've never used a v300, but I'd be surprised if it was much different to the 2450.
You never get a very good scan off 35mm film on these type of flatbeds.

So.....
If I have film, and a print of the same negative, would I be better off just scanning the print ? (using a flatbed such as the ones previously mentioned in this thread ?
