Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - GeneL - 05-24-2006 Between my Canon 20D, 100-400L USM IS, 28-135 USM IS, and 580EX Flash I've got quite a large investment in my camera equipment. I have Ritz Camera's extended warranty on the camera. It covers everything except loss or theft, so I still need something more. I'd feel a lot better if I had complete coverage including "mysterious disappearance." I once had an insurance company weasel out on me when an expensive camera was stolen from my car while it was valet parked in the garage at the Palmer House ini Chicago. They claimed, that since there was no sign of forced entry I wasn't covered ![]() I'm looking for the cheapest, but reliable insurance coverage that I can find. Your suggestion will be appreciated. Re: Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - GeneL - 05-24-2006 This is a touchy subject for me, which I'd rather not go into. Let's just say that the circumstances call for me to get my own coverage, since I'm not "the" homeowner." BGnR Re: Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - bangman - 05-24-2006 Try renter's insurance. I had over $5,000 in Nikon equipment stolen from my apartment. I got $4,500 of it back from insurance. YMMV of course. Re: Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - davester - 05-24-2006 If you have any assets at all and don't own a home you should have renter's insurance. It is a fraction of the cost of homeowner's insurance and is worth every penny. The landlord's insurance will not cover your stuff or the cost to find a new place if your rental burns down or gets flooded or ransacked by hoodlums. I doubt whether you can get any other reasonably priced insurance on your camera. Re: Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - BigGuynRusty - 05-24-2006 Hmmm..., Renters Insurance, I should have thought of that! BGnR Re: Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - GeneL - 05-24-2006 Ok, whose Renters Insurance? What company? How much should it cost? GeneL Re: Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - Racer X - 05-24-2006 I should have mentioned renter's too. Maybe a couple of hundred for 10K of coverage against anything bad happening, including breakage. If the gear is used commercially in any capacity, even once in the year, the insurance is a write off as well. Re: Best insurance against loss or theft for camera & equipment? - GeneL - 05-24-2006 Thanks everyone. I'll check into Renters insurance tomorrow. I'd still appreciate suggestions as to the best company. Thanks for your thoughts, GeneL |
