Solution. I installed the 10.6.8 Combo Updater on top of OS 10.6.8.
Well, maybe not exactly analogous to our beloved rebuild the desktop command. However, some previous threads seemed to provide an answer to two problems I thought were unrelated. I was struggling with Safari, mainly memory leakage I think. I downloaded and applied the 10.6.8 Combo Updater and apparently problem is solved. Another problem solved is related to my Monitor Color Proflle (System Prefs, Displays, Color). Suddenly my colors are truer. It's something that I had gotten used to and gave up trying to fix.
