OT: My wife's Rheumatologist's PA has the bedside manner of a rabid vampire BAT ! - cbelt3 - 09-08-2011

Aaarrrggghghhh
On the PHONE, while my wife is driving in heavy traffic...

"Uh. well, you know, your White Blood Cell count is slightly elevated, and there are a lot of reasons, but it's a pretty good chance you, uh, like have Leukemia or something. I'll talk to the Doctor, and we'll , uh, like try to call you maybe Monday or something ? "

Oh. My. Freaking. GOD...

Her grandmother and mother both died of cancer in their 50's and 60's. She has a hysterical fear of the "C" word. And this SCHMUCK yammers on about 'diagnoses' on the phone ? Without even talking to the damn Doctor about it ?

Oh, he is SO going to hear from me. There's a good chance I may use words of MORE than on syllable. Perhaps more than four letters at a time....

Maybe after the first ten minutes.

So sorry about that cbelt. Hope you get better news next week or sooner.

Completely understand your anger at that PA, that's inexcusable.

What a moran. You let him have it, but good, when you see him, and make sure to let the doctor know what he said, too.

You don't say crap like that on the phone, or in person, for that matter, but especially not on the phone. He hadn't even talked to the doctor, and he is speculating about what the diagnosis could be, WTH?

Whatever happened to tact?

Couldn't just say her white blood count was slightly elevated and will need to discuss it more with her doctor.

Just the facts as they are right now.

Totally unacceptable for a physician extender (PA, NP or CRNA) do be discussing ANYTHING about the medical diagnosis ,especially the big "C", without the doctor.
Yes you should complain but do not stop at the PA. You need to chew out the MD and HIS boss (the medical director of his clinic/hospital).

I have to deal with the politics of lesser trained medical providers impersonating doctors all the time and it drives me CRAZY!! Did you know that many nurse anesthesia schools are beginning to offer "Doctor of Nursing" degrees so that CRNA's can introduce themselves as "I'm Dr. Smith and I'll be taking care of your anesthesia". No matter that they "missed" 4 years of medical school and 4 years of Anesthesiologist training!

What a scam........ patients beware!!

Dad (an MD..... a real doctor of Anesthesiology ..... not a doctor of nursing!)

I had a doc that was a complete fuckup and did something similar to me, chuckling during his call that I probably had hepatitis.

Went to a different doctor who immediately diagnosed mono, confirmed with a blood test. What the hell kind of a doc can't diagnose mono? Argh! :banghead:

A good friend of mine was told on the phone by her doctor she had kidney cancer while she was at work. I wasn't there that day but she was too upset to continue working. RIP Nancy

We had a mom in my daughter's gymnastics parents group that was a nurse practitioner. Who got a Phd in education. Referred to herself as Dr so and so all the time. Deliberately letting people think she was an MD. Made me sick.

I too would go all Guido on the asshat who called.

I was waiting in a room for a report on whether I had cancer or not. After an hour, a man comes in in some sort of scrubs with several folders in his arms and a mask pulled down to his throat.

He says, "Well, I have some bad news................................I also have some good news. The bad news is, the doctor is running way late. The good news is, he will be here."

I got in his face and said, "Don't ever tell someone waiting on a cancer diagnosis you have some bad news."
