Love that album! I'd've worn it out if it hadn't been on a CD.

:agree:

It's been 20 years since it came out? Wow! IMHO, this was the last, truly great U2 album, where every track was a fantastic song. I didn't have a favorite song; I loved them all.

Meh. That was when they started going downhill IYAM. Soon as I heard "The Fly" on the radio, I knew they'd blown it. But at least it's not as dreadful as "Zooropa" or "Pop"...

The best thing from Actung Baby..."One". That song still grabs me.

And that's the song that supposedly kept U2 from breaking up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_(U2_song)

"During the album's recording, conflict arose between the band members over the direction of U2's sound and the quality of their material. Tensions almost prompted the band to break up, until guitarist The Edge composed a chord progression that inspired the group to improvise the song, which was written as a ballad. The band worked on the mix for "One" throughout the remainder of the album's sessions. The lyrics, written by lead singer Bono, describe fracturing interpersonal relationships, but they have been interpreted in other ways."

Always struck me as a sellout single, and a particularly insipid pop song. But maybe that's just me...

I think "Pop" is one of the most underrated U2 albums. Each time I listen to it I like it better and better. "Gone," "If you Wear that Velvet Dress" and "Please" are the standouts for me.

Zooropa on the other hand....

What are your favorites pre-AB? I'm of course partial to JT (like everybody else) not only b/c of the music but also what memories that music brings back (ahh, the innocence of high school!).

But I agree that things have gone "downhill" (relatively speaking of course), but I think it started after Pop (with the exception of Zooropa coming between AB and Pop).

Having said that I'm still a fan of the later albums, but just not as much as the War, UF, JT trifecta.

Yup, same here. I am pretty hardcore, though, and thought that they were on that downward trajectory circa The Joshua Tree era. October was the first U2 album I had and wore that puppy out.
