A few things eBay has changed lately that I dislike and one that I like. - Grateful11 - 09-29-2011

First the dislikes. I've been trying to clear some crap out out of the basement to try get my mind off things
and I knew there was some old video games and systems down there that we bought over the years and my son
Jacob volunteered to test them for me, even though he's 22 yo now when he starts testing he usually finds
something that he ends up playing for a couple hours. Anyway I listed an N64 system for like $40 and then
I listed another using "Sell Similar" like I've done in the past and I go to the second page and it tells me that,
I can't increase the price of the item because "This increase in your item price significantly changes
the value of the listing. To list at this price please create a new listing"
. I've been using sell similar
for odds ends around the house forever just another eBay aggravation.

Here's the work around before submitting your first item there's a check box that says something like
Create a Template to use later for other items yada, yada, yada. Then you just have to go to the top of
the page click on Sell>Sell an Item(something like that)> and choose your template then you change I
guess anything you want. It messed me up because I had to find something that would sell for less than
the first item I listed, because I went ahead submitted it with a later scheduled date thinking I could go
back and change the price later before starting the item I figured it was just a glitch or something, nope
couldn't do it.

I did find this thread about this and it's something new.

Next Pet Peeve, they are now saying that if you are selling an item that's in their catalog you have to use
their automated information system, that puts all that generalized crap up above your item. Sometimes
the automated info is so long I don't even think people scroll down to see the specifics of your item. I'm
seeing more and more listings with nothing but the automated info. and nothing in the description area
that tells about the exact item they're selling.

This one bothers me even more because they are forcing you use the info. gathered in the electronic
catalog about your item. I have never like using automated info about something I'm selling. It never
ends with these people, I bet 95% of the people making these changes have never sold not one item
on eBay. I still say they're trying to push out the small time seller, the one's that got them up and
running. I still see items from Asia being listed at Buy It Now for $0.01 and the shipping is like $30.
They have to pay fees on the shipping now so it doesn't matter but it's deceptive to some people. It
wouldn't surprise me if they have it where overseas sellers don't have pay fees on their shipping.

Coming this year to more electronics and textbook categories, the new way to shop helps buyers find the exact products they're looking for and see the top values from eBay Top-rated sellers right away. See it now in DVDs, GPS systems, and MP3 players.

Listings that don't use the eBay catalog in these categories receive limited exposure on the Search Results page and may be subject to a range of actions including listing removal.

Starting September 15, sellers will be required to always
list GPS systems (category #156955) with the eBay catalog. If a matching product doesn’t currently exist in the catalog, sellers will be required to add their products to the catalog before a listing can be completed.

The best deals from eBay Top-rated sellers are featured prominently in the value box at the top of the product page.

Great deals on eBay are highlighted by clearly showing how much the buyer can save off the list price.

If you include unique product identifiers such as UPC, EAN, and ISBN numbers in your listings, buyers can search on these fields and titles. Including these identifiers also makes it easier for buyers using outside search engines and mobile applications to find your listing.

Listing with the catalog is required whenever there's a product match in the following categories:
Apple Desktops (Category #111418)
Apple Laptops & Notebooks (Category #111422)
Camcorders (Category # 11724)
Cell Phones & Smartphones (Category # 9355)
Digital Cameras (Category # 31388)
DVDs, HD DVDs & Blu-ray (Category #617)
Film Cameras (Category # 15230)

Textbooks (Category # 2228)
Tripods (Category # 30093)
Video Game Systems (Category # 139971)
Video Games (Category # 139973)

Starting September 15, only items associated with the catalog in the category below can be listed. If there’s no product match to their item in the catalog, sellers will be able to create one when they list:
GPS systems (category #156955)

Sellers will be notified in early 2012 when these categories require listing with the catalog:
Cartridges & Toners (Category #s 156544, 51289, 51291, 51292, 16204, 11202 and 51288)
Motherboards (Category # 1244)

DVD Players (Category # 15077)
Home Theater Speakers (Category # 3276)

The new way to shop is now live in the following categories:
Apple Desktops (Category #111418)
Apple Laptops & Notebooks (Category #111422)
Camcorders (Category # 11724)
Cell Phones & Smartphones (Category # 9355)
Digital Cameras (Category # 31388)
DVDs, HD DVDs & Blu-ray (Category #617)
Flash Units (Category # 48515)
GPS systems (category #156955)
Hard Drives (Category #s 158830)
iPads & Tablets and eBook Readers (Category # 171485)
iPods & MP3 Players (Category #73839)
Monitors (Category # 80053)
Printers (Category #s 178)
Televisions (Category # 3320)
Textbooks (Category # 2228)
Video Game Systems (Category # 139971)
Video Games (Category # 139973)

Now for the thing that I do like is they allow for 25 more characters in your title. That allows for more Key
words not key word spamming but words pertaining to your item.

Why hasn't someone created a competitor to ebay?

There used to be hundreds. Back in the 1990s I had a folder of bookmarks just for good auction sites.

eBay knocked them all out.

Amazon's got the Marketplace and that offers some competition, but that's not auctions.

I have wished for a competitor for 10 years. ebay usually either crushes them or buys them. There is also competition from the scam "penny auction" sites, and how are you going to deal with payments?

It's a chicken and the egg problem. If you only have a few sellers, they'll want to protect their margins, and the prices will be high, so there won't be any buyers, because the buyers all want a deal. And there's no way to have a bunch of buyers ready to buy things if there are no sellers.

"starting sept 15"

they have been trying to force this catalog stuff for a while now.

IT DRIVES ME INSANE!

Because each and every one has inaccuracies in it (at least for apple computers that I mostly sell). Some of them are scrambled info from three different models.

But so far, I've still been able to list without them since sept 15.

I got a warning when I sold my Dell 27" 2560x1440 monitor. The description called it 1920x1200. NO WAY am I gonna use that info.

I'm really, really good at laying out a nice looking, info packed description that really can help sell my items and they want me to throw up all over that - ARGH!

However, when I sold my digital camera, one of 100s of the same model, I used the catalog because my top seller status and good price meant that mine was seen first of all. THAT was helpful.

But in general... guys... stay the fck outta my business. They get their cut - let me sell my stuff.
