OK, MR is my source for random knowledge on diverse subjects. A friend needs some help. How does one resolve the age-old problem of someone putting regular dish soap in an automatic dish washer? More water isn't the solution as that just results in more bubbles. We need some chemistry here I feel.
What do the sage wizards at MacResource say?

I've heard that you can remove as much of the suds as possible, then add 2 cups of vinegar and run the machine empty.
if that doesn't work, maybe you should look into a time machine....and not the Apple variety.

When I've accidentally used too much detergent in a load of laundry, adding fabric softener cut the suds back.

Honest. It's a friend. His wife is out of town and his 4-5 year old son offered to 'help out'.

Regular dishwasher detergent (the stuff that goes in the dishwasher). I know, you are thinking, "You're nuts! Why add more soap?" The dishwasher stuff has surfactants and anti-sudsing agents in it and so will kill the bubbles. If you don't believe me, make up a sink of regular dish soap with lots of bubbles, add some dishwasher detergent, and have at it. The bubbles will be greatly diminished if not gone entirely.

When my kids were younger my wife and I took a vacation from them. My son decided to have a few friends over for a good time. He also put liquid dishwashing soap in the dishwasher and turned it on. He called the GE answer line and they asked him if his parents were not home. This is a common occurrence when the parents are gone. The suggestion was a few tablespoons of vinegar and a shopvac for the floor.
