Republican Candidates Dismiss Criticism of Romney as Mormon
Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Republican presidential candidates dismissed a Baptist minister’s criticism of their party frontrunner Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith, saying his religion shouldn’t be a campaign issue.
“This is so inconsequential as far as this campaign is concerned,” Representative Michele Bachmann, of Minnesota, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “To make a big issue out of this is ridiculous.”
Businessman Herman Cain said “I’m not running for theologian-in-chief” when asked about Romney’s religion on the CNN program. “I am not going to do an analysis of Mormonism versus Christianity for the sake of answering that,” he said, adding “it’s not going to boost this economy.”
OF COURSE they do... and they'll mention it every chance they get...

For those of us who are not steeped in religion, what is Mormonism and why some have trouble with it? There has to be a reason.

Nutshell: Mormonism is based on the writings and teachings of Joseph Smith, who lived in the 1800s. These writings make significant additions and alterations to traditional Christian doctrine.

If you are not religious, you may find the differences to be meaningless. But to fundamentalist Christians, the differences are irreconcilable. Same goes for Catholics as well as many Protestants who take their faith seriously but would not describe themselves as fundamentalist, per se.
For the conservative Christian right to "look the other way" at Romney's mormonism would be a fine example of religious hypocrisy for the sake of political expediency.

But I thought not taking somebody's religion into account when voting was a sign of enlightenment.

IMHO, the differences are technicalities, as are the differences between all sects of Christianity. And all established to control various populations.
As far as Mormons go, they make awesome neighbors.

The candidates pretty much have to decry religious discrimination, their followers don't.
