alternate to iCloud - Spiff - 10-25-2011

I've done some reading and am not happy with Apple about the limitations placed on iCloud and iOS 5. Needs Lion. Not all my computers will run Lion. iOS5 is having issues working with Mobile Me (at times. Some customers don't have problems with Mobile Me at all).

Is there another service available to Mac Users to sync contacts calendars etc.? I really don't care about mp3s, as I can do that physically with iTunes (I assume). Notes - that'd be nice to sync, but not necessary.

I've done some looking around and have found software solutions, but nothing that seems to be internet based, like Mobile Me. I'm certain that I'm just not searching correctly. Any help appreciated!

You could do a lot of it with Dropbox.

Re: alternate to iCloud - what4 - 10-25-2011

Consider the free Dropbox. You can find instructions on how to copy the Calendar and Contacts folders into your Dropbox folder, then place a simlink in the original location of those folders.

I have Contacts and Calendar shared among two Macs and a Touch this way.

1Password can also be shared via Dropbox. When you install 1P on another machine, it looks at Dropbox to see if a data file is stored there, then asks if you want to use it.

I think I remember reading that Apple was working to make iCloud available to SL users with the next system update? Anybody else remember this?

EDIT: Yes, I remembered correctly: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/08/29/evidence_suggests_apple_will_bring_icloud_to_snow_leopard.html

Google does this for me already. Contacts, calendar, everything is sync'd wherever I log in. And if I need to extend that functionality, there are a bunch of Chrome apps to do it (eg. notes or stickies).

I can sit at any computer and quickly access everything (same goes for my phone).

Cool! I'm going to look into DropBox and Google when I can this week. Thanks!

The good news is, Apple's iCloud will have matured, and improved, by the time your machines have evolved over to Lion. Consider the rest of us to be like, paying Beta Testers. Our pain is your gain!

I hope Lion has matured and improved by the time my machine has evolved over to Lion.

There seems to be a love/hate relationship with Lion, I for one am holding off for change.
