How do you add file extensions to a bunch of files at once? - john-o - 12-01-2011

I used to do this with the AppleScript menu, back in the day, but in Lion I have no clue! Automator? Anyone willing to give me a quick lesson?

Many TiA,
John

Do I really have to spend $20 to do this? I feel like I had something similar around here somewhere. I'm off to dig around in my bloated Applications folder...

I use Renamer4Mac for this. I believe it's free.

I found my app: Name Mangler... It's donation-ware, and works well!

Thanks all!

Now all I need is a tool to tell me what a bunch of these files are supposed to be! They're on a client's Mac, copied from an old PC, and it appears most of 'em have no file extension. Most of those show up as "Unix Executable File", even though the first two folders I converted were all .eml (email message) files. Those were easy, since they had names like "FWD: family news"...

There's a mix of Word docs and .rtf files in their Documents folder, plus a bunch of random files that the computer thinks are .exe files. Those are proving to be more difficult to suss out!

Oh well, thanks again everyone!!

Automator will do it...

Launch, create a new workflow, use get selected finder items, then rename finder items

Pretty self explanatory from there but here's an old article for reference

I'm sure there are plenty of others out there.
