in this case, very young - six years. he already has the set of markers, large format drawing paper and an easel (although he prefers the floor). is there anything else you can think of that would complement that set up? paints are kind of out of the question for the moment.

How to books with lots of step by step illustrations. Shading, vanishing point, etc isn't lost on a six yr old if they have an interest. Also how to draw superheroes and animals

Art charcoal and pencils are a nice semi-washable solution as well. And a small sketchbook he can carry with him.

My kids used all get very nice sketchbooks for Christmas, every year. They use 'em up and some of it gets posted, but they keep the books stashed away. They're showing interest again, so they'll probably get them again.

A sturdy lightbox. Start him tracing things. It's one of the fastest ways to learn to draw, by copying.

I will add that if he enjoys the imagination part more than the drawing part, a lightbox would not be a good gift. If he enjoys the process of pencils on paper, a lightbox would be great learning tool.

I loved those kinds of kits when I was a "young illustrator".

As an illustrator myself, a perfect idea would be a nice box or container to hold his artwork and supplies in. Kind of like those Sterilite containers. I just picked one up in store for $24.

But more importantly look for containers that you can keep his completed artwork (even sketches) in to store for later when he grows up. Even those 8 1/2 x 11 cardboard boxes. You write a note about what you think of your kid and the art (maybe insert a photo of you guys) and put it on top, tape it shut and date the outside of it. Then store it away for 20 years.
