onyx or mackeeper - mrthuse - 12-13-2011 #1 son called from school and asked my thoughts on MacKeeper. Away at school he says his MBP gets boogies from too many things college-related and is slowing down a bit (guess I should be happy the laptop hasn't gotten doused w/ beer by now.). Told him I wasn't familiar w/ it, but when he described what it did, I said "Onyx". He's not familiar w/ Onyx, so I thought I'd pass the question along to the brethren. What say ye? Know Cocktail does things to directories some of you aren't crazy about, but can't comment on MacKeeper. If he's looking for a general, all around utility, which or the 2 or something else? Re: onyx or mackeeper - john-o - 12-13-2011 Stay far away from MacKeeper, imho... I like Yasu, but everyone has a favorite, as you say. I haven't used Onyx or Cocktail in years, since I'm very happy with Yasu... Re: onyx or mackeeper - numbered - 12-13-2011 No MacKeeper. Onyx continues to be good, though they appear to have "forked" at Lion. If he goes that way, be sure he gets either the current version or the pre-Lion fork on macupdate. Since he's aware of the cause, he's also aware of the real cure: Be disciplined and don't let boogers into the computer in the first place. If it already has boogers, I agree with john-o--YASU is a fine, non-invasive utility. Re: onyx or mackeeper - guitarist - 12-13-2011 MacKeeper is practically a virus, it's something you don't ever want to near your Mac, it's a PITA to ever get it off a computer infected with it. I agree with other comments here, that's one to avoid. Re: onyx or mackeeper - mrthuse - 12-13-2011 Done. MacKeeper is right out, then - thanks. Will advise either Onyx or Yasu. Re: onyx or mackeeper - space-time - 12-13-2011 macKeeper is advertised on many pages that I visist, I have it hate it hate it Re: onyx or mackeeper - modelamac - 12-13-2011 numbered wrote: Agree on both counts: Absolutely no MacKeeper. Period. Stay away.. I like OnyX. Re: onyx or mackeeper - Ted King - 12-13-2011 I periodically run AppleJack. Does OnyX do anything that AppleJack does not? Re: onyx or mackeeper - jdc - 12-14-2011 what are these "boogies"? IMHO, a simple restart is all that should be done. If hes got a newer MBP, consider spending $30-40 and bumping it to 8 gigs of ram. but otherwise, meh. $10 says he couldnt tell the difference before and after running these things. I do this with my wife all the time. "my computer is running really slow." I restart it and say try again... "much better thanks!". no windows "boogies" can do anything to his mac, so thats not a problem -- so what are we cleaning for...? |
