how do I create a partition for SnowLeopard without wiping Lion? - space-time - 01-10-2012 I would like to keep Lion where it is and also install Snow Leopard. In the past I always had to erase the HD and make 2 partitions when I wanted to have multiple partitions. I used Bootcamp once to resize a partition and install XP on the new partition, I wonder if I can do the same, and install SL on the newly created partition (and keep Lion) where is is but on a smaller partition? Thanks Re: how do I create a partition for SnowLeopard without wiping Lion? - jdc - 01-10-2012 Disk utility allows you to create partitions at any time. It does not erase the data. I will see if I can find the article and post back, if I do. Here it is: http://www.macworld.com/article/164643/2012/01/live_partition.html Re: how do I create a partition for SnowLeopard without wiping Lion? - Janit - 01-11-2012 It would appear that non-destructive repartitioning became available as of Snow Leopard (not sure if it was even earlier). Check here for how to do what you want to do: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20081187-263/how-to-keep-snow-leopard-when-upgrading-to-lion/ http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2390348,00.asp A similar strategy was recommended to me for adding an XP partition to a Dell Mini I have running Snow Leopard. Cloning a backup is usually recommended before such an operation. Re: how do I create a partition for SnowLeopard without wiping Lion? - space-time - 01-11-2012 Thanks!!! Re: how do I create a partition for SnowLeopard without wiping Lion? - Robert M - 01-11-2012 Hi everyone, Now that Disk Utility supports non-destructive repartitioning, how many of you have actually tried it? And, if you have, was it successful? Personally, I'd be very leery. I was never fond of the idea and would be very concerned about the integrity of my data. I'd run Drive Genius and/or Disk Utility permissions and disk verification and repair runs as well as perform a complete backup prior to repartitioning a drive. That's just me, though. Robert Re: how do I create a partition for SnowLeopard without wiping Lion? - LaserKun - 01-11-2012 While using Lion, I did exactly what you want to do with Disk Utility. Very simple, no Lion data touched. When I resize the default partition to make space for a new one (for SL), it also moved the Lion recovery partition. It seemed to work fine. I didn't know Disk Utilty can do live partitioning since I jumped from 10.5 to 10.7, I think it occured in 10.6 |
