Microscopy is fun.. every kid should spend some time looking through one at Nature's wonders.

One of the best gifts you can get any kid is a dissecting microscope. This is not one of those which you have to put a slide under the stage and get that objective lens a fraction of a millimeter away from the glass to focus (I had one of those as a kid, not too useful). Rather, it has a lot of space between the objective and the tray below and you can fit just about anything in there to look at, from a snake skin to a small tree limb.

Bloody things are expensive, though.
