where is iDVD? - space-time - 01-11-2012
There is no iDVD on my new MBP, but I still see it listed on apple.com. I thought maybe I didn't get the complete iLife suite and I need to buy iDVD, but I can't see it at Mac Apple Store either. Did Apple recently kill iDVD?

I have iPhoto, iMovie and Garage Band. I knew they killed iWeb (!) but are they also pulling the plug on iDVD?

Also, Software Update tells me there are no updates at this time, but Mac App Store tell me there is an update for iPhoto.

While originally only available for Macs with a SuperDrive, until 2011 it was included at no additional charge with all new Macs; from iDVD 6 onwards, Apple supports the ability to burn projects with third-party optical drives. iDVD is no longer preinstalled on Macs shipping with OS X 10.7 Lion or on iLife '11 downloaded from the Mac App Store, but is still available in the boxed copy of iLife '11 available from the Apple Online Store.[2]

I've noticed that as well.
In a way, it's quite sensible. iPhoto is a value-added app, not really part of the OS, so why not group it with other app-updates?
But it's also a clever way to push people to use the App Store.

"Clever" is not the appropriate word to describe what Apple does when they silently remove an app that has always been included in the OS. "Sneaky" is too nice a word. I choose "nefarious."

back to original question: any reason why they pulled iDVD, why not offer it as long as you can still get a Mac with optical disk, or Apple sels external USB DVD drives (for MBA). Optical is dying, but it is not dead yet.
If they offereded for sale as an ad-on via Mac App store for a reasonable price, I woudl pay for it. Now I have to copy it from wife's MBP or see if it is on my newly addived SL DVDs from Apple.

Didn't you notice that the mini comes without an optical drive? Apple wants you to transfer your videos to "The Cloud" instead of making more plastic coasters. Too bad they don't offer 50/50 Mbps internet for $30/month to 99% of the U.S. to take advantage of it.

This is teh crap for those who use iPhoto or iDVD. I did once, years ago, but I found Toast 10 to work quite well for my very modest DVD needs.
I assume that if your previous Mac used a recent version of iLife, you could transfer it to your new one?

except for mini and Air, all other Macs come with an optical drive.
