I'm tired of shopping late at night in suburbia and ending up behind people who always seem to have enough cash for beer and cigarettes. Re: Proposed Florida bill bans use of food stamps for sweets/snack foods - davester - 02-05-2012 Although it makes sense that you wouldn't want people to use food stamps on worthless crap, I strongly doubt that there is any real problem there and this is just pandering to the tea party crowd. Everybody needs a certain amount of nutritious food in their body, so they are going to buy that food in any case. Also, pretty much everybody is going to buy some sweet stuff at some time. If the food gets bought with the person's cash and the junk gets bought partly with food stamps doesn't matter a whole lot. In the highly unlikely event that a person is getting soooo many food stamps that they have a massive excess to blow every day on superbowl party fare then there might be a problem. I don't think that's the case. Re: Proposed Florida bill bans use of food stamps for sweets/snack foods - OWC Jamie - 02-05-2012 New York, California, Nebraska, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Michigan, Vermont, and Texas were all turned down last year attempting to modify the nutrition program to eliminate soda and other sweets. I'd like to see all people eat smart(er) , not just those on assistance. Re: Proposed Florida bill bans use of food stamps for sweets/snack foods - Grace62 - 02-05-2012 Great points davester. Always fun to see what America's least popular governor is up to. That mythical welfare queen has made quite the comeback, hasn't she? (I guess he's the welfare king now, hanging out at strip clubs.) This is not only a very ineffective way to address the obesity epidemic, which is a problem at all levels of society, it is also ridiculously controlling and bureaucratic and would undoubtedly create new problems. Blocking bakery cakes and candy but allowing Kraft Mac n cheese and most breakfast cereals isn't going to change much. It's also incredibly insulting to tell families who are geniuses at stretching family food dollars in ways most of us couldn't pull off, including the governor and legislators of Florida, that you are going to make strict shopping lists for them all because a few people have made some poor choices. Absurd. As for the debit card at casinos thing, is the state of Florida going to pay the banks to make the changes necessary to cause ATM's only at certain locations to reject only certain cards? I'm guessing that will cost the state a lot more than accepting that a very small percent of public assistance dollars will be misspent. Re: Proposed Florida bill bans use of food stamps for sweets/snack foods - Rolando - 02-05-2012 I actually agree most processed sh!t should be off the food stamp rolls. What's funny is that good food is NOT ok for food stamps. Many stores offer those oven roasted chickens which are delicious and not as bad as fried chicken, etc. Ok for food stamps? Nope, except for the day old ones in the cold case. So what else is ok for food stamps? The cold sushi rolls. That makes me happy; I know a welfare recipient who is giving her kids a good, delicious and overall healthy meal. Dollar stretchers aren't always nutrition experts and if it were up to the Nutrition Nazi in the White house you wouldn't even have french fries, let alone junk food that turns our youth into blind cripples. Maybe we should put booze and cigarettes back on the list because we all know geniuses at stretching food dollars would never buy them with food stamps even if they could. WIC and food stamps are separate programs with different goals. Families can be on both programs at the same time. WIC is to help reduce premature and low weight births by making sure pregnant women get enough protein and basic nutrition. It is not designed to meet the needs of an entire family. Food stamps can be used for nearly all grocery items. Do you ever volunteer at a food bank bill? If you do you'd have more trust and respect of people who receive public assistance to make food purchases. Our state's farmer's markets have also come up with innovative ways to accept public assistance dollars so that their fresh foods are included too.
