Sure, I can cut out the 2-3" damaged part, but I need to reuse the molly bolt again in the same spot. If possible. (And then ensure that dear wife doesn't hang Emelda Marcos' collection of shoes in a shoe hangar from the shelf anymore.)

Can't you just move that track a little bit to the left or right until you can screw into a stud? Failing that, most of the closet track systems have a rail that you can mount across the top of the shelf tracks where the rail screws into studs and then the tracks can hang from the rail wherever you need them.

Fix hole. Span horizontal distance with top/bottom 1x4s fastened to studs. Reattach tracks with REAL fasteners to 1x4s.

A patch similar to this...

Then use a wood screw to screw into the wood part of the patch.

A stud finder will be your friend.

Cut a rectangular hole 1" x 4". Insert a piece of 1/2" thick plywood 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" with some nylon cord through a hole. Pull it up against the drywall, drill some pilot holes and use some 1" flat head wood screws to pull it tight against the back of the drywall. Cut the string and then shape a piece of drywall to fit the larger hole you cut. Fill the hole with the piece, let it dry a day then sand and paint. Now drill the hole for the track.

Edit: Pretty similar to what the link M>B> posted.
