While this can be updated to a much more robust video mode, it does not have an audio port for external mics. You will need an external recorder or settle for the built in mic. The 3.5mm port was introduced on the T2i.

Also note that technically it captures 1080p, but only at 20fps. It will do 720p at 30fps though.

So if you want a body for video - this is not it. If you want an inexpensive still body that has some video capability, this is a great choice.

This changes all that my friend

This firmware hack adds a ton of features to the video mode. Scroll down and see what it adds to the 500D on the chart.

HDR, time lapse, focus peaking, audio levels, bit rate control, auto restart recording after clip ends, manual exposure, on and on, too many to list.

This firmware hack also brings 1080p video to the 50D but you need an external audio recorder since the 50d had no mic or mic port.

Do these things record a timecode of some kind, that would allow you to somehow easily sync up the video with a (necessary) external audio track later? I don't know anything about the formats they use.

Or would you just import audio into your editor and nudge the the audio track forwards or backwards until it synced. (I'm assuming FCP or Premiere can do that but I have no idea.)

Very fancy. Didn't know about ML - but I am not a video shooter.

I don't think they record timecode, but properly slate your production you don't need it.

For the cameras that have internal mics, there are plug-ins that work pretty well (I haven't used them myself, though) that will line up the audio from the internal mic and the audio from an external recorder.
