MOSCOW (Reuters) - Iran is capable of carrying out military strikes on U.S. interests all around the world if the Islamic Republic is attacked by the United States, Iran's ambassador to Moscow said on Wednesday.

The United States has tried to force Tehran to scrap sensitive nuclear work by imposing sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and giving U.S. banks new powers to freeze Iranian government assets.
Iran's ambassador to Moscow said that the United States would be making a serious mistake, akin to suicide, if it risked a military strike on OPEC's No. 2 oil exporter.

Washington has announced no such plans, but has said a military option is always on the table if Iran cannot be otherwise prevented from developing atomic weapons.

"The Americans know what kind of country Iran is. They are well aware of our people's unity," Iranian ambassador Seyed Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi told a news conference in Moscow.

"And that's why Iran is fully able to deliver retaliatory strikes on the United States anywhere in the world," he said, speaking through an interpreter.

"Even if it attacks, we have a list of counter actions. (The United States) would be disappointed with their huge mistake."

Oh gee... they're threatening Terrorism ? I thought they 'renounced' that ?

Bombast and pandering to the home market. They quite probably have widespread terror attack capability through Al Quaeda.. after all, Al Q owes them a lot, considering all the IED supplies and expertise Iran provides. But if they have the ability to 'destroy us' then why are they going to all the effort to build nukes ?

The Iranian citizens would happily toss out their religious dictatorship, but the Mullahs keep allowing the Revolutionary security forces a free hand in arresting and torturing anyone who is a potential threat.

I think you got that right. But I would caution people who think that we can just go bomb Iran and the consequences wouldn't be that great. Bombing Iran would go a long ways towards rallying people in the country who otherwise would not be inclined to support the mullahs. The Iranians may not be able to militarily keep the Straits of Hormuz closed for an extended period of time, but they could for awhile and oil prices would spike dramatically - and probably stay high even after the Straits were opened. That would probably send the U.S. back into a recession. The Iranians could cause unrest throughout the whole region by a host of other means as well. And there would be an inevitable increase in terrorism against the U.S. - which would be more of a psychological problem than anything else, but we've already shown that we can be tweaked all out of proportion by terrorism so that would probably be quite effective as well.

The Iranians are playing a stupid game of chicken that is all too likely to lead to a lot of grief for a lot of people.

i really don't see any sign that the 'US is planning on bombing Iran'. At ALL. Aside from squeezing them with sanctions designed to get them to talk to us, and stop blowing their people's money on nuclear weapons.

Continued speculation by the US media that the US is going to strike first is foolish in the extreme, and may be contributing to Iran's overreaction and propaganda. At what point will those media diots start actually reading US diplomatic positions, and stop thinking that global diplomacy works like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie ? (OK, admittedly diplomacy under the previous administration did tend to go that way..)

However.... if Iran starts something, US forces are indeed poised to finish it. "A easy as drinking a glass of water. "

Ratcheting up the tension between Iran and "The Great Satan" is an easy way for the Iranian leadership to distract the dissident factions and unify the population in a 'noble' cause. Add the Israelis, a few murdered scientists and stir well, you have the perfect recipe for xenophobia.

We don't know if the Iranians are actually building nuclear weapons. They do have a nuclear energy program, which the Israelis would like to see shuttered. UN inspectors are there or headed there and Iranians are not trying to block them.

I wish all involved would tone it down. It's important for Americans to remember that Israeli threats against Iran are essentially American threats, as far as Iran is concerned. As our President keeps telling everybody, we are in lock step with Israel, for better or worse.

exactly why Panetta let the cat out of the bag a couple weeks ago. lots of lead time and playing the blame game. his deflection will not do much good, though, I agree.

WE may not know, but I'd be hard pressed to think that our government doesn't have much, much more information than they're sharing with us.

You have GOT to be kidding.

A 'peaceful use' nuclear energy program is quite different from a nuclear weapons grade uranium refining program. They could have happily allowed UN inspectors into the sites, and everything would be hunky-dorey. But instead they refuse to allow inspection, suffer economic sanctions, and so forth.

Sorry, I don't see their motivation against allowing inspections of their 'peaceful' programs.
