Just crippled iMac 4.1 with download - RgrF - 03-27-2012

I prefer rollerball so when the ancient Logitech that worked for years gave out I bought a new wifi Logitech. It worked on plug in but when I went to the site and downloaded software, it killed my Intel 4.1 iMac.

Can't start OS 10.6. Tried Disk Warrior using Command "C", nothing. I'm backed up on a cloud (teach me), no original install disks. Appointment at Genius Bar tomorrow AM.

Suggestions?

Unplug the mouse.

Try booting with a wired USB Keyboard and Mouse.

First thing I did. It's no longer a mouse problem it's a boot problem apparently cause by a download from Logitech.

iMacs have 4.1 GHZ processors now? Cool!

Try holding down the Option key when booting to select the boot device. This is all before any software gets loaded from the hard drive, really can't be something that Logitech could impact at that stage.

You say that this problem was cause by just downloading something from their website? You didn't actually install anything, just downloaded it?

You might also try holding down the Shift key to enable it to boot into Safe Mode.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

During startup in Mac OS X v10.4 through Mac OS X v10.6.8, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. During startup in Mac OS X v10.2 through v10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.

To leave Safe Mode, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

Try unplugging it for 10 minutes.

You might want to hold off on blaming the Logitech download for breaking your machine. Just because your least favorite song came on the radio at the same moment you were rear-ended doesn't mean that Celine Dion totaled your car.
