Best Buy bleeding and closing large stores - samintx - 03-29-2012
Just heard they are closing big stores and going to small stores. I have known their earnings have been in the dumpster for a year or so...but this was just talked about on the radio today. Not surprised. Amz and the Internet are eating them alive.

Closing 50 Stores, Layoff 400 people. Smaller stores.
Gee, no C. City, others, Costco, online, must be killing electronic stores.
How much B and M competition is there?

There was a link here a couple of months ago (sorry, too lazy to track it down) to a story that pretty much predicted the fall of BB. It was a good read.
Pretty soon, if you want something like a new TV, you'll have nowhere to go to actually look at it before deciding. That's the problem with everyone buying stuff on the internet.

rz.. I think you'll find that the big box discount retailers will still be around. These are the ones that have eaten Best Buy et al.. Wal Mart, Target.... Seen WM's Electronics section lately ? It's a whole new design.
There are, in most markets, still boutique stores that offer audi/vid - phile level equipment in an expert environment. They are still doing OK. Which is nice.

It's sort of ironic that Best Buy is being eaten alive by being disintermediated by consumers using the very products that they've sold over the years.

At the same time, Fry's and HH Gregg are expanding.
It's always been this way-- Electric Avenue, Circuit City, Zayre, Venture, Turnstyle, Handy Andy, Builder's Square . . . retail giant overexpands and ultimately ends up getting eaten by the next chain. I've always wondered when BB would get eaten, ever since they first appeared; doubtful that e-tailers are the main reason.

Part of the problem is that at least half the store they are paying rent on is devoted to music, games, movies/tv media. Those aisles are all dead space.
