[plumbing!] Thank you, Nibco - deckeda - 03-29-2012

The shutoff valve in the garage for the spigot on the other side of the garage wall leaks when opened up. The leak is at the stem. I've since loosened the outer nut and applied some RectorSeal to the threads. Couldn't find my white tape. Don't know yet if it'll work. Doesn't matter.

I removed the spigot's guts, because I could do so without having to shut off water to the house---both valves use the same guts and I wanted to see about replacing said guts.

I learned the spigot is a 63 or 736 Nibco, no longer made. Local supply shops don't have them. Nibco's site says parts are not available. I emailed them anyway, asking what my options are, if any. I now have 4 guts coming to me, gratis---there's another spigot and internal shutoff on the back of the house.

I know ball valves are better, but sweat soldering isn't my specialty. Hopefully I can put that off and be I'll be good for another 15 years or so.

Looks like sweat soldering wasn't the specialty of the person who installed that shutoff either...

Take that disassambled faucet to your home center (middle picture), they will fix you up with packing and gasket plus probably some hints.

I never learned how to solder either. I discovered compression fittings. I'm told they are every bit as good as soldered. Anyway, mine have held up.

Maybe. But when I'd visited my two Big Name home centers, with part in-hand, they both said they have no such parts.

(I can see the black gasket, but what is "packing?" )

Re: [plumbing!] Thank you, Nibco - deckeda - 03-30-2012

Do you mean the packing nut? I don't see those going bad.

Edit: Nevermind, I now see there's often another rubber washer or something that helps seal the packing nut.

I can't beleive they wouldn't have a gasket, my dinky local hardware has 4 feet of shelf space full of them.
That might not be another gasket, but it could be packing cord, a flexable rope that is wound around the stem under the nut and compress when tightened.

Soldering is pretty simple. Takes a little practice and the right tools. Learned how to do it with youtube and brother in law.

I installed ball valves in my cousins condo, old valves were one piece with metal hose connected to it. Not compression. The only way to change it would be to replace the whole valve.
