Apple TV and Power Mac G5. - Mr645 - 03-30-2012
Any limitations using the Apple TV with a PowerMac G5 running 10.5.8?
Will also be using with iPhones and iPads etc, but video is all on the Power Mac. Mostly viewing with VLC, but screen mirror should work, right?

Screen mirroring will require Mac OS X 10.8 or later and thus will not work.

Everything else, i.e. video and audio (AirTunes) streaming, photos, etc., will work fine with Mac OS X 10.5.8, even on lesser hardware than your G5.

Apple TV and iDevice limitations will be based on whatever version of iTunes they require.

hmmm, my problem is that iTunes does not play most of the videos I have.
I pay a service for access to motorcycle road racing from around the world, and the downloads are mostly .mkv files, or sometimes .iso files, and none are iTunes friendly.
Any hacks to get iTunes to play files like VLC does?

Well, I think your concern is to get both iTunes and Apple TV to play those files. Perian may work for the former and FireCore (for Apple TV 2 only) for the latter:

In the meantime, tell your motorcycle site to get a clue, join the 21st century, and convert to H.264.

Could you use HandBrake to upgrade the older files? I don't know if this is best approach, but I used it for a couple of my old files...

Depending upon the model, your Power Mac G5 has four or eight dual inline memory module (DIMM) slots for Double-Data-Rate (DDR) synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) devices. Your computer comes with a minimum of 256 MB of random access memory (RAM), installed as a pair of 128 MB DIMMs in two of the DIMM slots. You can install additional pairs of DIMMs in the open DIMM slots on your computer's main logic board.
installing a PCI Expansion Card or Replacing the AGP Card
You can expand the capabilities of your Power Mac G5 by installing cards in its expansion slots. Your Power Mac G5 has four expansion card slots, three of which accommodate Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) cards and one that accepts an advanced graphics port (AGP) card.
AGP cards and PCI cards have different connectors, so you cannot insert a PCI card into the AGP slot.
