iOS 5 on old iPod Touch? - (vikm) - 03-30-2012

Have an old 8GB Touch (actually it's the wife's). I have no idea what generation it is but am looking for verification that iOS 5 doesn't run on it. Yes, no, maybe? Thanks.

If it's an 8GB and it's not a current generation, then it can't go to iOS 5.

I'm in the same situation... I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch, which cannot be upgraded to iOS 5, and that alone is making me think about buying a new(er) one. More and more apps require iOS 4.3 or later, and I'm stuck at 4.2.1.

Could be worse, I have a 1st generation Touch that doesn't even go to 4!

OK. Dumb question. Can you do a search in the Apple Store for apps that are iOS specific, like best app for something that will run on 4.2 or under?

I looked on the Apple site and didn't see any kind of list like that, Randalls. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist but I didn't see it.

Thanks for the replies. It was worth a shot.

I'm waiting for my 2gen to be replaced like the Nanos for the POS battery. Then I'll worry about the iOS...

I'm sick of everything being upgraded and costing more. I'm about to the point I'm thru buying anything and will just enjoy what I've got. About the only app I've downloaded is a Free solitary and KOI

Same here. I have two 2nd gen iPod touches. Even iOS 4.3 would be a big boon as it adds Home Sharing and AirPlay for all apps.

During the late Fall 2011 announcement I realized my plan to upgrade was inopportune as there was nothing new for the iPod touch besides an additional color. The best time to upgrade would have been during the 2010 announcement or in all probability 2012 when upgraded iPod touches are actually released. I solved my lagging iOS problem by largely abandoning the platform.

Meh, iOS 4 isn't that great on 2nd gen hardware anyway. Sure, more apps are technically compatible, but the whole experience is something of a downgrade from iOS 3. The third party firmware that adds iOS 4 features to iOS 3 is an example of how Apple should have better tuned iOS for older devices.
