Trying to figure out why a shortcut isn't working - tuqqer - 04-27-2012

I'm a huge fan of keyboard shortcuts, and use the OS's built-in system for assigning shortcuts a lot (System Preferences: Keyboard: Keyboard Shortcuts: Application Shortcuts.

I'm having a hard time setting up the shortcut to a Pages menu selection that I use all day long, the one called Edit: Writing Tools: Look Up in Dictionary and Thesaurus

(I also know you can right-click on any word and it'll come up in the drop-down menu, too, but I want to shorten the time for both options).

I'm attaching the screenshot, to show that I've got the exact working and capitalization in the Sys Pref setup (as that is critical). I've got it exactly as "Look Up in Dictionary and Thesaurus" ... I've tried numerous keyboard shortcuts to it, but make sure I'm not using anything already in use by Pages or the system in general, yet none of them work. You know it's set up correctly, because the new keyboard shortcut actually shows up right away next to the menu selection. I've restarted the Mac, but that's not normally required anyway.

If anyone can seen what I'm doing wrong, I'd be most grateful.

That's an exercise in frustration. I've tried for years with Leopard, then SL, now with Lion to use that option to open apps with an F key for each. Doesn't happen.

I had to resort to Spark (free), which works a charm. I don't know if it will do what you want, but it's worth try.

I wondered if the feature was buggy. I think it might be.

For now, I just used QuicKeys to do what I needed.

Thanks for the idea of Sparks, I'll look into it.
