Firewall problems (Asus RT-N12, 4th gen Touch) - Black - 07-04-2012
It seems I have to turn the router's firewall off to get the Touch connected to 'net.
What do I need to do for the Touch to connect while the Firewall is on?
What are the consequences of the Firewall being off?
Have searched a whole bunch and can barely find anything that remotely relates (damn that useless FixYa site above all.)

now that's interesting. i just went through all the settings on my netgear router. nothing says firewall. i guess i've not worried about it as the macs have a firewall. does one need a firewall if your network is password protected?

Up until now it's been enabled and I've never had a problem getting any other device connected. I know macs have their own "protection" but what I don't know is whether having the firewall disabled opens the router itself up to unwanted access.

The basic firewall shouldn't mess with outgoing traffic.
What are the LAN-to-WAN settings? You shouldn't need LAN-to-WAN filters. If that's enabled, it's most likely your problem.
Turn off the MAC filter, too.

Thanks. Not using any LAN to WAN filters or MAC filters. I appreciate your offering help but I'm disappointed that your first assumption is that I've misidentified this problem as relating to the Firewall.
I tried everything possible-- documented in prev thread-- and not until I turned off Firewall did internet connectivity flow.

'Seems that your Firewall is misbehaving then. If the other stuff is disabled then it should only be blocking connection attempts from the WAN side.
That thing was designed to be a cheap sh!t router for hobbyists to mess with. Try flashing it with DD-WRT and see if it starts behaving like a genuine piece of kit instead of the cheap sh!t that it was from the start.

I went back through some advice received on another forum and followed some links and tried random things, and changed my security settings from WPA to WPA-2, and now it connects even with Firewall enabled.
Wish I knew how to "restart" this thing without wiping the settings so I can see if it sticks.

Powered off and when back up couldn't get in until I "forgot" and re-entered network. Trying again.
Reboot 2 . . . Youtube button . . . *boom*, all good now I think.

'Didn't know what you were referring to at first.
Yeah, shut down by holding the "sleep" button and then swiping across the red slider when it shows up.
If your iOS device seems to have crashed you can also do a "hard" shut down by holding the sleep and home buttons simultaneously for several seconds.
