Genealogy software - reunion or something else? - bhaveshp - 07-05-2012

Back in the 90's my dad & I used Reunion to compile our family tree. I haven't updated it in many years - especially as it was "Classic" software.

What is the favored curent genealogy software now? I'd like to share the family tree with my extended family on my password protected website, so how would a web app service compare?

I still use Reunion. It's been updated for OS X.

Reunion is still one of the biggest "big dogs" in the genealogy market, and it's the one I use.

You may be able to qualify for upgrade pricing if you can still find the manual for the Classic version... I did. You MUST have the paper manual, because in order to activate the UPGRADE version, you need to type in something from page "such and such" to install the new OSX version.
At least, did a couple years ago...

As for sharing, I don't know... Never even looked at the capabilities.
You may have as good a luck investigating Ancestry.com's personal pages.

do you have an iPad?

Ancestry is cool. and free.

Oooh... thanks for the feedback. I know I've got the paper manual around. Hopefully can use that to save $50.

I'm afraid the pointer to Ancestry won't be of much use. While they've got 65 million records, they'll all be US centric, which won't help our family as both my wife & I are naturalized citizens ;-)

See, I was inspired by yesterday's thread...

No so fast... They have a TON of international records also... (but I think much of that database is part of some extended subscription package... my mom is subscribed, I'm not).

That, and for setting up the personal pages, it doesn't matter...

Hope this helps!

Another vote for Reunion, wife uses it every day and has for well over 15 years now. It just was updated about 2 months or less ago, but there has not been an update to the iPad version in a year +.

It's a great piece of software. Made for the Mac ONLY. By Mac people. Smile What more do you need to know? Smile

I haven't kept my Reunion up to date; its pretty pricey. I found that Gramps worked very well with my data. I can't remember if I had to export from reunion or whatever, but know I got it to work without much trouble.
