Doggone tomato thief! - Gutenberg - 06-24-2006
After waiting weeks, yesterday two of my cherry tomatoes just began to blush. I was thinking that I might be able to have them this weekend in a salad or something. Today I went out to water and the two ripish tomatoes had been picked. Dang! I am going to have plenty of tomatoes and I don't mind sharing but I think the first should go to the gardener.

What a crappy world we live in sometimes . . . You could always choose to think the person was starving and really needed to eat. That is a possibility, but probably just a crappy thief . . . but, again, maybe not . . .

Perhaps the thief was of the 4 legged or winged variety?? That bright red spot in a sea of green is just TOO hard to resist!

Sweet 100. Really wonderful plant. I don't believe that the thief was of the four-legged or winged variety because just those two tomatoes were cleanly cut and they were in the center of the plant, not really visible unless you are standing over it but not flying over it. There were men doing utility work on my street and one of them stashed his lunch in the barrel. When I went out to water he rushed over to retrieve it. I wondered why he didn't simply put the lunch in the truck, and then I saw that the tomatoes were gone.
The plant already has more than 100 fruit set, but most of them are tiny and I have been waiting for those first guys to ripen for three weeks. I am seriously considering loading the barrel on a hand truck and moving it to the backyard, even though it doesn't get the hot afternoon sun.

Sorry to hear about the thievery. On the other hand, you have helped decreasing the national obesity pandemic
My in the pot tomato plant has been producing about 6 small ones and one big one. They are still green tho'. Like my neighbor up the street corner I am thinking of purchasing an upside down plant so I can hang it in my front porch. Perhaps that is something you want to consider?

Had a neighbor kid a while back who could not be broken from picking tomatoes when they just started to ripen and putting them in her refrigerator for me "to keep them from going bad".
At least it sounds like yours got snacked upon.

I have a muskrat who apparently likes tomatoes at the same level of ripeness that I do. It took me a long while to figure out the culprit. In your case it sucks that an adult would do this. I don't know why anyone would think flowers, fruit, or veggies in someone's yard is free for the taking.
