What do I do w/ adolescent wild turkey (bird not the drink) - ztirffritz - 06-25-2006

My wife and I came home from a bike ride today and found a relatively large bird in our back yard. Upon further investigation it appears to be a juvenile wild turkey. It is just strutting around our yard and not really doing much aside from picking at bugs and such. Eventually we'll have to let our dog out and he'll surely go into pointer-mode until he passes out. The cat on the other hand may have finally met his match. What do you think I should about this huge bird?

I already checked, they're not in season.

If your yard isn't fenced, let the dog out on a chain or leash and the bird will be gone! Fenced, just let the dog out and let nature decide what happens. Big dog? I wouldn't put my bichon up against a wild turkey.

I thought that only another turkey could tell when a turkey is in season... 8-)

It seems to have moved on.

I had one decide my front yard was its new home.
Would attack me when I went out the front door, pecking at my legs and hissing.
I fed it corn and sunflower seeds because its antics were comical.
It would eat food off my shoe but not out of my hand.
Would follow me around the yard.
Slept on the same pine tree branch 10 feet up every night.
Disappeared after about 6 months.
Either lunch for a predator or found a flock and decided move on.
Never found a pile of feathers like that left behind from a hawk's lunch.

Not terribly bright or self preservating animals. Not surprising they were hunted to near extinction by the colonists. Easy pickings.

Hunting to extinction or near extinction makes the humans pretty stupid, too.
