[data recovery] Need help ASAP! - Bo - 08-16-2012
Co-worker just deleted a folder of production files (moved to trash and emptied trash [don't ask]. She immediately realized her mistake and hasn't done anything on that machine (27" iMac 10.6.8) for fear that deleted files may be overwritten. There is no back-up [don't get me started]. Drivesavers is around the corner and quoted $900-$2000 based on description of events. She's leaving for Europe this evening so time is of the essence...
Any downloadable software solutions that people have had success with? Disk Drill?

I've used Prosoft Data rescue 3 with good results.

I'd turn off the imac immediately...you never know what programs or part of the OS will be writing data to a part of the disk that contains data you need. If you have another mac that can connect to the imac in Firewire target mode, that'd be the method I'd recommend to scan the disk with something like Data Rescue. I've had good luck with that program as well.

In OS 9 I had luck immediately unplugging the machine and then turning it back on. The system never wrote that the files were deleted and they all showed up in the trash.

Good advice! Machine has been off since this happened and she does have another iMac on her desk. Will Data Rescue read an external drive in target mode? Presumably she'd run DR3 from the good iMac (rather than a bootable DVD) and set it to scan the target drive...correct?

Yup, it should be able to read any connected drive.

Another Data Rescue ++
It will take a long time so you need to be patient. It has to inventory the disk and find recoverable files. IIRC I had to let it run all evening & overnight (12+ hours) You will also need an external drive with enough free space to recover files to.
