His rants seem to be getting more and more bizarre. I think since it was proven that his huge ratings were bogus, he is trying to get more listeners any way possible and has decided being a wild eyed lunatic will do the trick. People love to watch a train wreck.

It's obvious Limbaugh has been trolling or spoofing his crowd for years, probably from the start. He's saying this outrageous stuff because he can't believe they fall for his sh!t, regardless of how insane it gets.

I also believe that he was never sincere, but I feel like he's getting kind of shrill and desperate these days judging by what I see quoted here and elsewhere.

He has run out of all outrageous yet plausible things to say to get a rise out of his audience. The idiots eat it all up. I think he's incredulous and asks himself "how far will these nuts really go?"

My apologies for being naive and ignorant on the topic of Limbaugh's ratings, but I've been kind of overly busy with some work on gene activities in cancer progression. Could you possibly provide some information or a link or something to the story? I wouldn't be all that surprised that the claimed listenership is inflated, but it would be interesting to see any hard numbers that are available, or any rational estimates based on something other than Limbaugh's own claims.
