In realpolitic the states subject to court review are not in play and never will be. States that are or may be in play (Ohio, Pennsylvania even New Hampshire) are not subject to the same legal strictures as the old southern Jim Crow states.

I also think a judge blocked Texas' redistricting plan. A little good news.

It's still a good slap in the face.

That's pretty cynical Roger. The right to vote matters for every citizen, regardless of which party dominates their state politics (at the moment.) I would not describe Texas as a state that will "never be in play."

With the explosion in the latino population, Texas will be in play very shortly. Hence the GOP's efforts to negate demographics.

As of the 2010 US Census, .... Hispanics (of any race) were 37.6% of the population of the state.

It's not just Latinos. Harris County (~4 million) went blue in 2008, will again this year.

I should learn to never use absolutes. I did say realpolitic which to me means here and now, not maybe and when.

Yes - Texas and South Carolina and Georgia will go for Romney.

But DOJ isn't fighting this because it hurts Democrats politically if minorities are disenfranchised, they're doing it because it violates basic civil rights. I think the red state thing is moot.

I don't know the details, but I think Texas is a special case for some reason because of their civil rights history.
