Evolution of the iMac Graphic - pinkoos - 10-23-2012

Pretty telling graphic on the design changes of the iMac over the years. 2002 (iLamp) to 2004 (G5) was a regression in my opinion.

without the optical drive, the new ones really do look like they are just simply displays

Re: Evolution of the iMac Graphic - decay - 10-23-2012

you can't wall-mount an iMac G4 easily.

we have clients that mount their newer iMacs.

Always loved the lamp-style iMac. I wonder if, had Apple switched to Intel sooner, the lamp model might have lasted a few more iterations. It's main failing, as I recall, was that the G5 chip needed too much space/cooling to work in the "lamp base".

there may be a nugget in that statement...

I'm guessing efficiency wasn't the G5 CPU's strongest point.

Case in point. They got it squeezed into the G5 iMac, which was a cooling/ventilation disaster.

How do you figure? They didn't have overheating problems. They had bad capacitor problems. The same ones that plagued every PC builder from Apple to Dell at that time.

Re: Evolution of the iMac Graphic - decay - 10-24-2012

G5 processors ran very hot - that's a fact.

the G5 towers wouldn't have had liquid cooling if they didn't require it.

the capacitors were another problem entirely.

as were the power supplies that crapped out early, on the iMacs and the towers.

Even current iMacs have overheating problems. The Apple Support forums are replete with posts about iMacs on which the graphics chip has been damaged due to excessive heating.

I remember drilling vent holes in the flying saucer APBS's...

have dealt w/ a myriad of client iMacs, which means taking them into Apple for repairs, and our white Intel iMac doesn't get pounded on heavily, so haven't thought about drilling holes in it..., but..., now I'm wondering if maybe iMacs' longevity might be helped by adding some strategically placed vent holes...?
