What do think of iPad Mini pricing? - Numo - 10-24-2012

Personally, I think Apple is making a big mistake. From a marketing standpoint, an entry level price of $299 would be a powerful psychological incentive to those of whom price is important, even though rationally speaking, the new iPad is only $30 more. IMO, Apple is missing a golden opportunity to drive a stake into it's competitor's hearts, and win a lot of new converts.

Too low and it dilutes the Apple brand. I think it's spot on. Less than the full sized iPad, more than the crappy 'toy' Android 'tablets'. And enough to continue with the profits, and push up that number at the top of the page.

The iPod Touch is $299. I think that price point is going to upsell a lot of people to the miniPad.

My kids (12 and 8) both have the previous generation of Touch. $299 is a lot of moolah for gadgets under those circumstances - I wish there were a lower iOS entry point.

If it were $249, I'd be getting one on release day.
If it were $299, I'd be seriously thinking about it.
At $329, I'm thinking I'll stick with my Nook Color.

I think the problem is that the new iPod touch at $299 is overpriced. I know it's a marvel of miniaturization, etc., but from a graduated price-point structure it limits how low the iPad mini can go.

One way I shop is hey, this is quality - difference of $30-50 or so is fine with me - just think of what I waste on junk - too many high dollar coffees, etc... I am willing to pay for quality. No Nook, Android, etc. in my future at all! For years, I will be enjoying the quality of an Apple product. I still use the very first iPod touch! Works great! How about a 3-5 year old droid, etc. product? To me, pay now or pay later...

I think the iPod Touch should be $199 - $249, and I think the iPad Mini should be $249 - $299

Maybe, someday...

I was originally going to argue that you'd be paying extra for more screen and less speed but then I realized that they're both using the A5 CPU, so you're really just paying $30 for a larger physical screen.

I was also going to argue that the iPad mini's screen while physically larger has a fewer pixels but I did the math and realized that's not true: it's 1024x768 (786432 pixels) on the iPad mini vs. 1136x640 (727040) for the 5th gen iPod touch.
So I'm just going to be quiet instead.

I'll be facing that in a few months.. my portable tech is way out of date and dying - both my ipod and iphone are first generation. The touch I use everyday, the phone I use as a touch but little as a phone.

I need to decide weather the get a new touch (refurb at $250ish), get the mini (likely wait for refurbs at $280ish) or get an iphone via Straight Talk at ~$50 month plus iphone cost which would replace both.

decisions, decisions
