Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - JoeH - 10-25-2012 I know there are a number of persons here that do Folding@home. If any of you use PS3's to fold, there has been an announcement by Sony that they are discontinuing support for the Life with Playstation application in November. That includes the Folding@home app that is part of the Life app. Sony announcement - http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/10/21/ps3-system-software-update-v4-30/ F@H Blog announcement - http://folding.typepad.com/news/2012/10/life-with-playstation-ending.html Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - onthedownlow - 10-25-2012 That's unfortunate, for many reasons, but even on the superficial reason that the Life with Playstation app was nice to run as just a general screensaver/newsfeed for digital signage (or just something to look at). Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - mattkime - 10-25-2012 did i miss the explanation? Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - JoeH - 10-25-2012 No, that is pretty much it, those posts are all that has been publicly announced. There is speculation that dropping the Life with Playstation app is either a cost cutting action by Sony due to licensed material, or due to a need for ROM space for the features included in the update. F@H goes away as part of dropping of the Life app. Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - Speedy - 10-25-2012 Sucks. But if I don't do the update I imagine it will keep folding and I could care less about any update. Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - onthedownlow - 10-25-2012 True, but you might not be able to get online/sign on (which Life needs) so you won't be getting any news feeds or be able to upload any work units. The way I read it, it sounds like if you have Life right now, it may still stay on your system. They mention 'new users': "In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update." ...so maybe with the new PS3s and anybody who didn't have the app installed before, they won't have access to it but original folks will still be able to keep it. Initially, you had to click on the Life app and then it downloaded it and installed it for you. Those who haven't done it yet by the new firmware update will not get that chance. (I hope this is the case) Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - Jimmypoo - 10-26-2012 Speedy wrote: If you could care less, then why DON’T you? Why announce to everyone that you COULD care less, and then not ACTIVELY begin caring even less!? If for no other reason... to do so would establish your pejorative as a reasonable course of action. Me? I couldn’t care less about the PS3, since I don’t have one! Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - Speedy - 10-26-2012 Sure, I now care less about the update than yesterday. Re: Folding@home and PS3 Announcement - onthedownlow - 10-26-2012 I updated mine last night, but only time will tell (next week or two) if the Life app is pulled from the system or ceases to function. |
