NBA coming back to Seattle?!? - Lemon Drop - 01-09-2013 Reports and rumors and "non-denials" are flying, but it looks as though talks are underway for a purchase of the Sacramento Kings by Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer. They would play in the Key Arena the next season or two while awaiting construction of a new arena. http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2020093088_kings10.html http://www.sacbee.com/2013/01/09/5102688/kings-decline-comment-on-rumored.html?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=t.co Re: NBA coming back to Seattle?!? - ztirffritz - 01-09-2013 Now if they'd just buy an NHL team so that there is a reason to go to the new arena...I'm sure the NBA team will be successful, but I'd bet that an NHL team will bring far more money into the city. I know that it seems counter-intuitive, but think about this: Vancouver is only a few hours away. Tickets for Canucks games are sold out into the next century and they cost a FORTUNE. Canadians would commute to Seattle in hordes to see NHL hockey in Seattle for a fraction of the cost of a Canuck game and they'd all need to eat, sleep, and buy gas somewhere in or near Seattle. Operating costs for an NHL team are far lower unless you have one of the few NHL stars on your team. In comparison, the NBA would mostly take money from the people of Seattle and take it out of Seattle. Re: NBA coming back to Seattle?!? - DP - 01-09-2013 That's how much I pay attention to pro basketball... Never knew Seattle lost the Sonics. I thought the OKC team came from Charlotte or from somewhere in the South. Now if you want to talk hockey, what was the first American team to win the Stanley Cup? Re: NBA coming back to Seattle?!? - pRICE cUBE - 01-09-2013 This speculation all started with a post by a food blogger. The times we live in are strange. I was in the media/staff parking lot at the Kings arena back in early 2000 something. I witnessed one of the Maloof brothers pulling up in a blue Ferrari convertible 2 seater. As he got out of the car, 3 young ladies emerged from the other seat. I was fully expecting a gal or two to emerge from the tiny trunk. They sold off all but 2% in their Palms Casino in Vegas and their beverage distributorship. The Monarchs WNBA team was a big money loser. The Maloofs have been in some financial disarray so it would not be surprising that they are looking to sell to cover their losses. It is my belief that when they leave Sacramento, the last Kings vehicle out of the lot will be that a Ferrari convertible, top down, loaded with gals and a Maloof brother flipping the bird. Re: NBA coming back to Seattle?!? - Lemon Drop - 01-10-2013 ztirffritz wrote: Yes the buzz is that if we get the NBA team back, odds greatly increase that an NHL team will follow. Seattle is the second largest city (after Atlanta) not to have an NHL team, so I think we're due. I've never been a hockey fan but had a great time at a game last month in Greenville, SC, which has a minor league team called the Warriors. They beat Toledo. Very few fans were in the arena though, and it was a Saturday night. Hopefully they'll do better but at that rate it's not promising. Don't know about this push for hockey in the southeast.... Seattle though? yes. Re: NBA coming back to Seattle?!? - Racer X - 01-10-2013 Great, just effing great. We do NOT need 5 stadiums. Well, right now we have 3, and a 4th being built. UofW stadium not included. What a bunch of whiney babies. :cursin::cursin::cursin: Re: NBA coming back to Seattle?!? - pRICE cUBE - 01-10-2013 Lemon Drop wrote: I thought it was the daughter of an NBA agent, who said she heard it from "someone who would know," which is what gave her some cred. IMHO, the Maloofs need the cash and they have been toying with other municipalities to drive up the asking price. The brinksmanship became apparent when they pulled out of the deal with Sacramento giving them almost everything they wanted. The bait is set and someone like Hansen and Ballmer are biting. |
