Application to verify a program is running on a remote PC? - John B. - 01-12-2013

Reaching out to the forum braintrust here:

I have a remote commercial property with a couple of programs that need to be up and running on a PC there in order to pass access information between a tenant database and a gate entry system. One of the applications has an auto-update routine built in by the software developer that occasionally does not fully execute and the application will shut down.

Does anyone know of an application, service, etc that I can install on a single PC (Windows XP) that would send out an e-mail or text message if the application it is watching stops running? I'm looking for something a little more automated than my current option, which is LogMeIn to the PC to verify all apps are up and running.

Thanks in advance -

does it run on a certain service port, like ftp?

how often does it happend? can you schedule the application or even the entire PC to reboot each morning at 3 AM for example?

Thanks for the point toward SIMON, I'll look into that this weekend.

As there are 3 applications running on this machine that all exchange data with each other and then pass the data to/from their home systems, I'd rather not script a daily reboot if I can find a simpler solution. We're generally talking less than once a month that this one application shuts down, and probably half of those times (once every two months) it's due to a pre-announced software update from the developer where I know I"m going to have to remote in the next morning to see if the update completed successfully.

we monitor clients' backup servers running Crashplan.

when it goes down or up, we get an automated email like this:

Crashplan is back up at 11:13:18 on 2012-12-21. All is well.

Thank you for your attention.
