What's the most expensive stock, per share? - CJsNvrUrly - 02-06-2013

Seeing Google at $770 got me to wondering if it would split soon...at what point does a stock split?...how high can it go?...
It made me wonder, what's the most expensive stock per share?

Maybe Berkshire Hathaways? Warren Buffet's company.

$146,735 a share.

I think rather than the absolute price of a stock, that you should look at the P/E ratio of a stick and compare that to the stock of other companies in the same industry group.

the old theory was that splitting a stock makes it more accessible to smaller buyers and inversely, NOT splitting it keeps the rabble out and also speculators. Not so sure how effective this is these days.

A company can do as they wish - there are no rules governing when a stock MUST split.

I think there used to be extra fees involved if you bought stocks in units of less than one lot.

Which is more like buying into a fund. Berkshire Hathaway has holdings in dozens of companies like Geico, MS, Apple, etc.

Buy class B. It is cheaper. It split to making it more "available" I guess was his reasoning.

The most expensive stock is the one you lose the most money on. Tongue

Absolutely. (haha, get it?)

Share price is meaningless by itself. You need to look at the market cap (which is the number of outstanding shares * share price) and the P/E ratio to get an idea of the current "value" of a stock/company.

I was hoping that AAPL would do a split after Cook took over. I guess it's not going to happen. A 10-1 split would put it back in the "standard trading range" (which is something I just made up).
