Chantix, anyone have info? - RgrF - 03-07-2013

Wife was prescribed to help quit smoking.

Backstory she went through triple vascular bipass surgery last summer. One of the side effects was that she left off smoking. Sx -months later she succumbs and secretly stars smoking again. After heavy gunfire from myself, the grandkid and daughter she seeks help from the MD who prescribes, a drug that comes with heavy warnings about side effects.

Anyone else have any interaction with this stuff?

GF tried it last spring. It worked for her just fine. Had some odd dreams though.

I tried it but it didn't help me quit smoking. In fact, it made me very, very depressed. The dreams were the only good part about it. However, a PA in my doctor's office recommended a psychologist who did hypnosis. I have not smoked, nor had the desire too, in three years. If you live anywhere near Albany, NY, I'll give you the info. Good luck to your wife. Up until hypnosis quitting smoking was the hardest thing I ever attempted.

Re: Chantix, anyone have info? - Stavs - 03-07-2013

I've tried Chantix numerous times. Granted I say numerous, but it does work...hear me out.

The first time I took it, I was well on my way to quitting. After a few months I was at the point where I was down to 1 or two cigarettes a day - I was there I could see the finish line! Unfortunately, my wife was still smoking, which wasn't an issue, but then my brother in law moved in with us who was a smoker. The stress of the extra body in the house and such kind of through a wrench into my plans. Had I been stronger, I would have been done.

Second time around, my wife made me stop as she felt it made me cranky and I was becoming miserable. I didnt think so, but I stopped for her and didn't quit.

Third time around I stopped myself as it was wreaking havoc on my blood sugar.

The stuff does work....I did not get suicidal thoughts like some folks, but I did have the wierd dreams which were awesome. That was my favorite part.

I encourage your wife to try it and just monitor the behavior. Its worth it.

I should have mentioned that a few friends were able to quit while using Chantix. It's worth try as the effects vary from person to person. I agree with Stavs that behavior changes should be monitored.

Best of luck to your wife.
I still remember when my dad quit, when I was a kid. It was so hard on him, and the rest of the family, but he did it and never smoked again.

Had me worried for second there!

Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I ever did, and perhaps the best thing. If she wants to quit, she'll find a way. Good luck to yous with it.

I quit using Nicorette gum. What I did was chew it for ages longer than their schedule suggests, athough I did decrase the number of pieces per day as time passed until I was only chewing it when my body demanded it. I chewed it for over a year I guess. My friends and family made fun of how I had traded one addiction for another. I used it until I didn't feel like I needed it any more, and I've never smoked again. Nor do I want to.

However, a PA in my doctor's office recommended a psychologist who did hypnosis.

A former co-worker used hypnosis after trying several different methods (aversion therapy!) and stopped smoking for good. She failed miserably with the previous methods.

She said the big difference was that she no longer had the desire to start up again. I don't know how the nicotine dependance was handled, but she was really happy with the hypnosis.
