The girls said if any race other than Caucasian tries to attend the white prom, that student would probably be escorted off the premises by police. That was the case last year when a biracial student was turned away by police. wrote:

This is 2013.
This is a public school.
This is why I have no interest in living in the deep south.

"In a world full of color, Wilcox County High School still sees things as black and white.
"There's a white prom and then we have our integrated prom," said Bloodworth.
The girls said if any race other than Caucasian tries to attend the white prom, that student would probably be escorted off the premises by police. That was the case last year when a biracial student was turned away by police.

The senior class is raising money to pay for the integrated prom, without the help of school officials. It will be held April 27.
The students said the school offered a resolution to permit an integrated prom for all students to attend, but not stop segregated proms."

We're rednecks. We don't know our ass from a hole in the ground.

Perhaps one of the students will invite Mrs. Obama as his guest. *that* would confuse everyone.

Yeah, because there is no overt racism anywhere else in this country.
I saw this story the other day on our local news channel and was appalled that this sort of thing still existed. I guess I, and other people like me, should leave the Deep South, so that only people like this would live here. Maybe I'll move to south Boston, I hear race relations there are great and always have been.

THAT would be awesome!

To pretend like this and similar instances isn't far more common in the south is disingenuous at best.

There, fixed that for you.

Re: Georgia on My Mind - deckeda - 04-05-2013

Generalizations will never be adequate descriptors and that especially holds true for "the South." In my experience, as a newcomer (2000) it was explained to me thusly, "There's Atlanta, and then there's Georgia."

Political, social and cultural evidence bear this portrait to often be true and now we have another unfortunate example. But as examples go, this one's surprising today. Racism IS everywhere in America but no I don't think you'll find it overtly, openly elsewhere.
