Guns and Colorado - SteveG - 05-20-2013 Gun suicides and gun homicides don't map onto the same areas.. This is an investigative unit's report on Colorado's deadliest neighborhood. Interesting reading. ![]() http://kunc.org/post/pikes-peak-park-colorado-s-deadliest-neighborhood In Colorado, as elsewhere, the debate roils over gun laws, fueled by mass shootings. But the truth is the horrific events of Columbine and Aurora represent a tiny fraction of Colorado’s unremitting loss of life involving guns: 6,258 deaths from 2000 through 2011, 76 percent of them suicides, 20 percent homicides. That’s 10 guns deaths a week – every week – during that span. ---- Five of the top six neighborhoods for gun homicides were in the Denver or Aurora, while the top four neighborhoods for gun suicides were in Grand Junction, Montrose or Mesa County. Re: Guns and Colorado - cbelt3 - 05-20-2013 Structurally the article represents a model that can be applied to any state in the nation. This quote is most telling: “Where there’s poverty, there’s drugs – drugs and alcohol,” she said. “Where there’s drugs and alcohol, there will be guns. Therefore there will be crime.” There is definitely poverty and guns in Pikes Peak Park – and it is nothing new. " I assume there are more articles to come ? This one represents death in a disintegrating poor neighborhood. I can see the same thing in a 1940's 'model suburb near where I work . I have family that saw the same thing in a disintegrating neighborhood in St. Louis, and ended up moving out to keep their children safe. What's the root cause ? Poverty. Right ? He also just signed into law one of the nation's toughest gun control laws. It can be done. Re: Guns and Colorado - cbelt3 - 05-20-2013 Lemon Drop wrote: Pray, exactly WHAT will be done ? The OP article noted that the guns used in many of these crimes were illegal. Are you planning on rescinding the second amendment and confiscating all privately held guns, plus house to house searches to find all the illegal guns ? Re: Guns and Colorado - Lemon Drop - 05-20-2013 it seems like we're coming back around to "let's don't have any laws because somebody will break them." here is a summary of Colorado's new gun laws, for the non-hyperbolic: http://www.cga.ct.gov/2013/rpt/2013-R-0198.htm Re: Guns and Colorado - cbelt3 - 05-21-2013 Lemon- I simply asked what your end game expectations were. But thanks for sharing the laws. Interesting summary. I like the 'court order' requirement for mental condition challenges. That's heartening. Much better than the 'might have seen a shrink' kind of rules that were envisioned elsewhere. Ownership rules ? ick. You can transport pot in CO. But if you are a non-Colorodan, and happen to have a 20 round mag for your Ruger 10-22 that you bought after july 1, 2013, and are transporting it through Colorado, you can be arrested, fined up to $1,000, and jailed up to 12 months for having it in your vehicle. All of these state by state laws are continued reasons why a coherent federal level common regulatory environment is needed. Works for me! Re: Guns and Colorado - Dennis S - 05-21-2013 cbelt3 wrote: I think that comes under the heading of "well-regulated." Re: Guns and Colorado - Manlove - 05-21-2013 Relating to the need for a single coherent law of the land, America will fall by not standing together. |
