What's yours? So far, I like these:

Judy Collins

Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues

and pretty much any bagpipe version out there.

Mahalia Jackson.

If you don't get goose pimples or tear up after hearing her version, you had better check for a pulse.

ANYthing with Bagpipes. Sung or just piped. My eyes tear up, my hair stands on end, my face takes a bluish cast from the battle paint, my slacks turn into a kilt, I can feel the hilt of my ancestral claymore in my hands, taste the smoke of the fire and cannon , and and smell the stench of battle in the Highlands.

Amazing Grace...

My favorite arrangement of this song was in the movie soundtrack for "Maverick".

In Star Trek 2, there was a few bars of the song played via bagpipes when they shot Spock out through the missle tube, that was kind of cool sounding. (Been a long time since I saw the movie, hope I am not confusing that with a different tune. Rolleyes )

So basically you turn into him:

I have never heard a bad version of Amazing Grace.. even a tone-deaf mute can perform a moving version of the song. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music ever recorded.

That and "Danny Boy". My cousin sang that for our grandfather's funeral. She has a beautiful soprano voice (and a PhD). When she finished the church was transcendently still for minutes. I have NO idea how she did it. We sang Amazing Grace over my father's grave... I completely lost the ability to sing at the start of the second verse.

I've made it clear that Amazing Grace WILL be played at my funeral. I should probably make it clear that Led Zeppelin should be played at the party afterwards, where they drink up all my leftover whiskey.
