Did Apple Change Its Networking Protocol with Mt Lion? - mrlynn - 06-19-2013 Since installing Mountain Lion on my iMac, it cannot connect to my OS 9.1 G3 over the local network, and vice-versa. I get this message on the iMac: There was a problem connecting to the server. . . wrote: The two used to see each other, with the iMac running Snow Leopard. /Mr Lynn Re: Did Apple Change Its Networking Protocol with Mt Lion? - Article Accelerator - 06-19-2013 This will do the trick: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4700 Re: Did Apple Change Its Networking Protocol with Mt Lion? - mrlynn - 06-19-2013 Thanks AA! I saved that page in my IT folder for reference. I had been trying to copy a folder from the G3 to my daughter's legacy iBook via the iMac, and was getting frustrated. Finally I remember to look at the G3's IP address, copy that into the server browser on the iBook, and got the two together directly. But there are times when I need to copy something off the old blue-and-white G3, so that page will be helpful. /Mr Lynn Re: Did Apple Change Its Networking Protocol with Mt Lion? - tenders - 06-19-2013 Wow, this problem drove me CRAZY when I upgraded to Lion two years ago, and suddenly the NAS with ...all... my files in it suddenly disappeared. It took a long time to figure out what had changed, which included having to boot from the (slow, non-SSD) backup drive. The fact that network settings could be adjusted to allow the old protocol was apparently not known, and I ended up spending a lot of time and money replacing the NAS and figuring out how to move the files from the old NAS to the new one. It cost me probably $500 and 15 hours of prime summer time. There are three results. (1) I have a much nicer NAS, which is good, but I ended up spending a lot of time and money when it was not convenient to me, which was not good; (2) After some growing pains, I am on Lion, and I generally like it especially for the closer integration with the iPad and iPhone (ie, Contacts), but (3) I will never, ever, ever again be an early adopter of OS updates. Re: Did Apple Change Its Networking Protocol with Mt Lion? - decay - 06-20-2013 don't forget the Microsoft<>Apple back-and-forth about Sync Services, Outlook, and iCloud. In short: it won't work. used to, doesn't now. Each company blames the other. Works great on a Windows PC, though. |
