At first I thought who cares, but then I read that it will be compatible with iOS devices too:
"Google said Chromecast will work with both Android and Apple iOS devices. "
It's not clear what the output resolution will be, hopefully 1920x1080, and what about audio?

Oh yeah, and they show this cute little thing:
But of course you need to plug it a power source for it to work.
I don't think I will be having an HDMI stick hanging off the back of my receiver, sorry.

No remote either, so you need your device too, just to do anything with it.
The most interesting thing to me is that they are supposedly giving 3 free months of Netflix with it, even to EXISTING subscribers, so if you already subscribe that brings the cost of the device down to about $15. Because of that, I might buy one to mess around with.

in for 1 (backordered, anyway) from Amazon. If nothing else, the 3 free months of Netflix make this a $10 toy to try out.

The power adapter is an optional requirement. In fact, most modern TV's with HDMI 1.4 or higher spec are supported. The Chromecast can draw power from the HDMI port it's plugged into. If your TV doesn't support that, there's also a USB cable and power adapter included in the box.
All in all, I feel like it's still a huge work in progress. The SDK will allow for some exciting developments, and I'm happy to say that Google has committed to support this device for quite some time. It gives me piece of mind that this won't become out of date each year.
That being said, it's only $35. What a steal for a device that really brings value to any TV
