so there I was shaving this morning when I remembered a razor thread back in January and... - Monster - 07-26-2013

...thought I would make a note that I'm still using the same razor that I had been using then, and still using the same methods as I mentioned.

FWIW I remember reading somewhere (Yahoo?) awhile back about some guy getting rid of his stash of razors because he found a way to make them last longer and stay sharp.

Basically, wipe it completely dry after each shave with a towel and don't leave it in the shower.

I've been doing it ever since and it works - still using the same razor for the past 6 months.

Granted, I'm not shaving on a daily basis...

It does work. I also use the hair on my arms as a kind of strop, running the razor backwards up each arm 25 to 30 times after each shave.

I use a Gillette Fusion razor, and each cartridge will last several months.

I rarely use shaving cream or gel, but will sometimes put lotion on before shaving, of course at the moment I have a full beard for the winter, but I still shave my neck and trim the edges.

Monster,

I remember that thread. I still don't understand how you can shave with gel/cream/soap/lotion/etc. I'd shred my face without something of that sort. Even the cheap crappy stuff is better than nothing at all. FWIW, I haven't touched my old Sensor or Fusion since switching to a DE razor. No regrets making the change to old school DE shaving.

Robert,

I don't know how I do it, maybe it's the angle of the blade, or that I don't press very hard, and go over the same space more than once.
Keep in mind that I do at least have a wet face when I shave, and I almost always do it right after having a shower.

A big part of it is that people commonly confuse stainless steel as rust free, which simply is not true. Technical term is cress Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel. Note RESISTANT, not RUST FREE. Keeping a straight bladed razor in a wet environment like a shower will cause micro pitting on the edge.

it's a good thing I keep mine nice and dry until use then.

I kept seeing "cress Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel" as reading "Crest Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel", and thought to myself that I don't use toothpaste on my razor.

Racer,

Very true. Stainless steel is rust resistant - and some types are more rust resistant than others - and it also sparks. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed.

Everybody's beard is different. Everybody's skin is different. I have a curly beard, and sensitive skin. I have to use a good cream, and my blades don't last long. If I clean and dry my razor, and strop it on the inside of my arm, it will last longer, but 12 shaves is about as much as I'll get before razor burn sets in.

I always hated those Queer Eye shows where they tell guys, "Shave with the grain!" I have no grain. I can't even count on my whiskers growing out. If I don't shave three times, at 120°, I will still have odd, sporadic whiskers here and there.

First of all Monsters description of shaving lead me to believe I was having a nightmare Confusedmiley-laughing001: I was actually craving Stromboli, but suddenly lost my appetite.

I rinse my Fusion with Alcohol before and after shaves and I dry the handle.
My blades last months and sometimes I do shave twice in a day.

Happy shaving one and all *(:>*
