The hot spell is likely to last at least until 26 July, say forecasters. Norilsk - above the Arctic Circle - is known as one of the world's coldest cites, and is built on permafrost. Frosty weather is a reality for 280 days a year. In summer time, average air temperatures are 14.6 degrees, before this year when Norilk finds itself in the furnace. ... But then, there's this: http://siberiantimes.com/ecology/others/news/heatwave-sparks-new-fears-over-forest-fires/ In Omsk, which had several days of unusually hot temperatures, 11 people were reported to have died from the heat. Concern has been expressed over elderly people in the excessive heat. Smog is also a problem in some cities from forest fire fumes. ... A state of emergency is still in force in Tomsk region, while it has been withdrawn in Tuva Republic. In the Far East the fire fighters within the last 24 hours managed to put out 15 forest fires out of 40. Other 12 fires were localised. But in general on whole Russia the number of forest fires is growing, Russian federal forestry reports. Within the last 24 hours it went up from 202 to 229 spots. And this: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2013/07/its-90-degrees-siberia-and-people-are-sunbathing/67663/ The city is far enough north — over 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle — that it's built on permafrost, permanently frozen ground solid enough to support buildings and infrastructure. In other words, and as we outlined yesterday, extended periods of high temperatures would not be a good thing. Is this the result of climate change? Scientists will note that isolated weather incidents can't be linked directly to changes in the climate. Heat domes existed before we started burning coal and oil. But scientists will also note that climate change tends to result in more extreme weather events. Yes, heat domes have existed a long time, but a heat dome in a much-hotter atmosphere would naturally suggest much higher temperatures. Unprecedented temperatures... ... And this: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2013/07/price-tag-global-warming-just-went-60-trillion/67605/ Why the Price Tag for Global Warming Just Went Up by $60 Trillion The release of methane from thawing permafrost beneath the East Siberian Sea, off northern Russia, alone comes with an average global price tag of $60 trillion in the absence of mitigating action — a figure comparable to the size of the world economy in 2012 (about $70 trillion). The total cost of Arctic change will be much higher... ... At least they get a few days to relax out in the sun. It's so wet here in NC it's crazy and we've only had I think 4 days this year at 90 or above. We've had 5" of rain so far this month and less than 2 hours away a friend farmer told me today he's had 17" of rain so far this month. He lost his entire Oats crop due to not being able to get in the fields with a his Combine, stuck it up twice trying. Wove yourselves into this mess, let's see if you can weave your way out. Re: When hell freezes and Siberia melts... - Ombligo - 07-27-2013 For the non-Celsius literate, the temperature Norilsk is currently having according to the story is 90 degrees F instead of the average July temp of 56 degrees. Re: When hell freezes and Siberia melts... - $tevie - 07-27-2013 Incredibly depressing. And frightening. |
