Israel: Rabbi's ruling stirs 'kosher' smartphone debate

An Israeli rabbi's ruling on a lost smartphone has raised questions as to whether it's theft not to return it to its owner, it appears.

The controversy surrounds an incident in which a saleswoman in a bakery in the Israeli city of Bnei Brak refused to return a smartphone after it was lost, the Ynetnews website reports. It seems there was some debate as to whether she had broken the "thou shalt not steal" commandment, until Rabbi Nissim Karelitz ruled that cellular phones should not be considered property as they are "non-kosher".

So refreshing, after reading so amny stories about the Christian Fundie Right being irrational, to find out it's a universal problem.

Wait, does that mean we'll see a crazy religion story about Liberal Esperanto-Vegan Birkenstock Unitarians next?

Despite the unchecked wikipedia entry ("He is one of the most highly respected Orthodox rabbis in the world and one of the most important leaders of the Haredi world, together with Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner."), most Israeli commentators are divided between 1) "the guy is some kind of Ultra-Orthodox nutso" and 2) "who is this guy?"

There are any number of people like him running around Israel and are scorned by most of Judaism. (Nice try by the BBC to slander Jews, however).
