wasp's nest near front door - kill or leave be? - mrbigstuff - 08-17-2013
the latter part of that choice implies that they will not be a danger to us as we leave our house. it's about 6 feet from the front door, near the ceiling of the front landing.
I'm inclined to leave it and hope they do their thing and get out. but, I have children and I don't want them invading inside my house in any way.

You can choose to ignore them, but don't be surprised if they fail to reciprocate.

I hope you're not serious. A wasp nest that close to your front door definitely poses a danger to you (and others). Bear in mind, this isn't just as you enter and exit your home. They'll also find their way inside the house. It won't be a matter of if you or someone else gets stung. It's a matter of when you or someone else will get stung.
I wouldn't want a wasp nest _anywhere_ within the vicinity of my property. But, that close to the front door? I'd've had it removed immediately. I wouldn't have had time to post about it in the forum. Or, if I did post, it'd be to say I just got rid of a wasp nest. That's how fast it would be removed.

wasp spray with 20 foot effective reach anywhere close enough to the house where a kid could get stung
the nests can still get huge even at the end of August
in the woods I would let them be

What would the wasps do if you built a nest inside their house?
They would protect themselves and their young.

Water under the bridge now, but it would have been a better outcome for everyone involved if you had taken care of it when they were beginning to build the nest.
How high above your heads? If it's pretty high up, you might be able to leave it alone. On the other hand, in my experience they will probably become more aggressive and protective as time goes on.

Spray them at night while they are all home and relatively sluggish. Make sure the spray is for wasps and not just flying insects. Test the spray stream first. Cover yourself up with gloves, a raincoat and a paper sack over your head with eye holes cut out.

let me add: it's very small, about the size of a large mouse (the computer kind).
and we didn't notice it because we had not noticed any wasps around until this morning.

I kill all insects anywhere within 20 ft of my house. I'm sorry, but survival of the fittest rules....
