I’m never one to worry much about lens dust, but the color bombs they throw out at Color Runs are different. In the last month my lens rental business has had over 20 lenses and several cameras nearly ruined by these things. For what it’s worth, all of the renters tell us they really weren’t near any of the major ‘color bombs.’
Here are a few pictures from a brand new lens that returned after its first rental — at a Color Run. These pictures are, of course, after the lens was cleaned externally. All of that dust is inside the front and rear elements.

Putting camera gear in storage and not paying attention is really sad.
The mold that can accumulate in tropical conditions is devastating.
I had a Konica T4 system with 3 lenses that was destroyed by my ignorance
Sure it was a 35mm system but the photos it rendered were awesome.
I chastise myself often over that loss

2% of profit from this for profit business to charities doesn't seem like much "fun" to me.
With all the pneumonociosis, asbestos, tobacco and myriads of lung diseases and affliction lawsuits and diseases, throwing color bombs into runners lungs makes little sense to me.

Dang...I'd be deathly afraid for my lenses if an event like that happened. Can those lenses be salvaged?

The physical size of the powder would need to be 2.5 microns or smaller to go directly into the bloodstream. Larger particles are eventually removed by the lungs. The powders used will get filtered out. The larger question is what chemical dyes are in the colors. If the coloring has toxic dyes, it will might into your system.
